    How do I best apply?

The cover letter – your individual visiting card

An individually designed cover letter can be a persuasive way of showing us your professional and personal qualities. What is important is that your cover letter always focuses directly on the requirements of the job. We’re happy to give you some tips on what a powerful and persuasive cover letter might look like.

Make sure that the cover letter does not exceed one page in length.
Break the letter up into paragraphs to make it easier to read.
Show how your skills and knowledge are relevant to the post.
Your cover letter should answer the following questions: Why are you applying? What do you find interesting in the post? What qualifications do you have? What career expectations do you have?

What you should not do

Do not just list the points on your CV/resumé in chronological order.
Do not simply list your skills; rather, show how they relate to your past work.

The CV/resumé – your key to success

Your CV/resumé gives the reader an overview of your scholastic and professional career. As is the case with the cover letter, the form is important. For this reason you should divide it up in a way that conveys the sense and shows an eye for attractive design.

One option is to divide it into four sections:

Personal data: Surname, first name, place and date of birth, address, marital status.
Education: This includes all scholastic, university and professional courses. In order to distinguish yourself from other applicants it is recommended to list not only examined subjects and grades obtained but also specialised courses or special areas of study, assignments carrried out during training, the title of your dissertation, and any awards received.
Professional history: List the phases in your professional life and their duration, the precise nature of your work along with your tasks and areas of responsibility. It is always a good idea to draw special attention to every promotion, especially those within a company.
Special knowledge and further qualifications. This point covers details of skills that you have gained outside the strict confines of schooling and career, knowledge of languages and IT, as well as information on further education, honorary commitments, membership of associations, and special interests that are relevant to the post or underline important traits of character.

Application portfolio or online application?

Whether you opt for a traditional application portfolio or an online application, the important thing is always to make sure that your documentation is complete. In addition to an individual cover letter and an informative CV/resumé you also need copies of your school diplomas and testimonials. Place these in the same order as they are mentioned in your resumé. In the case of school certificates final grades are sufficient.
