Shipbuilding is changing. Liquid gas and electric propulsion systems or entirely new hull shapes require unusually highly specialised experts. Within this demanding technology sector, we are engaged in the development, construction and commissioning of complex systems from the navigation bridge to components exposed to maximum load such as bulkheads, cables and tanks. The next generation of ships already emits less CO2 than required by international standards while being safer and faster by a similar margin.

Will there still be traffic jams in future? We are convinced: A good many fewer. We are developing and integrating main and auxiliary control units for cars – the basis for driverless cars. A key factor: cars have to become smarter. We are developing and integrating new software for this as well. Active safety and new sensors for driver assistance systems, even the radar assistance systems for keeping a safe distance from other vehicles, including autonomous braking, are no longer science fiction and will be incorporated in every class of vehicle within the foreseeable future.

It`s already begun in Formula 1: It doesn`t yet repair itself but modern telemetry systems, which we are working on, ensure that the car takes care of its own value-preservation. Not only does the software report to the driver`s smart phone when the visit to the workshop is due but analyses all the performance data by itself and is able to anticipate impending problems or defects in good time. Assistance programs automatically issue reminders to replace wearing parts and vehicle fluids. Result: the car of tomorrow won`t find itself immobilised.

SUVs aren’t sports coupés. Why shouldn`t they offer the same driving sensation? We banish the boundaries between vehicle categories at the push of a button and create new technologies from design through to readiness for series production. To make an unadulterated pleasure of every hairpin bend, we are developing you stabiliser assistance programs that control each individual wheel`s angle of inclination. And by incorporating the frontal camera and new image recognition software into the feedback control system, the car can compensate so perfectly for undulations that you don`t spill so much as a drop of coffee when encountering an undulation on the motorway.

Sometimes the car sees more than the driver – thanks to cutting-edge image recognition software. And I still in lane? What road sign is that? Is that an animal or a person in the road? Newly developed analytical algorithms filter the most important information from the camera and radar signals in the vehicle and initiate an appropriate response by the assistance systems – faster than a human can, and learning all the time in the process: this has long since left the realms of science fiction and will soon be ready for series production.

Everything begins in the mind – including the new generation of high-speed trains. From developing a prototype to readiness for series production, we are working on a power car outer shell including clutch unit. Here, where the stresses are among the highest in the entire system, an extremely resilient and durable high-performance assembly is being created from high-tech metal and composite materials. This enables the train to achieve speeds equal to those of a formula racing car – day in day out, what is more.

There are no two rivers the same – one reason why hydroelectric plants are always individually planned. We use ultramodern planning software to shorten this complex process, making it possible to configure turbines and power units by means of a detailed simulation based on locally captured data. The dividend this yields is building time, effectiveness and green electricity in the shortest possible time from a gigantic hydroelectric power plant in Brazil.

We are developing advanced, fraud-proof test kits and constantly optimising existing model ranges. An absolutely critical element in this is also customisation to different police standards around the world – from capturing the requirement to implementation. Few countries have such a high vehicle density as Germany. Anyone wishing to record vehicles here needs extremely accurate technologies that operate consistently. The solution is compact pillars, optionally with a solar panel, that capture each vehicle with an HD camera – while an on-board transmitter sends a pass code to the device as the vehicle passes. We are involved in developing the core technology: Image recognition algorithms. These don’t just recognise cars but also record the class, weight and number of axles – painting an accurate picture of the traffic flow throughout Germany.

Prior to the prohibition of anti-personnel mines, the UN estimated that around 110 million land mines had been laid worldwide. What happens after armed conflicts have ended? High-tech helps with clearance: we are developing software for the latest generation of mine detectors. These still have to be operated by specialists risking their lives, but mine clearance robots are already being successfully trialled. A challenging task – but where safety knows no alternative, the best developers have to be assigned to the job.

Why do parking guidance systems end at the car park entrance? We are working on a networked system that will be capable of informing motorists in a town of available parking spaces. This works by sensors in the asphalt communicating with sensors in the car and with the parking guidance system. If the car passes a parking space a sensor in the asphalt reports this to the driver. After parking, the same sensor registers that this space is occupied and communicates this to the parking guidance system – more accurately and above all more conveniently than existing models.

No employee knows off the top of his head how many circuits and metres of cable were installed in Europe`s biggest airport. When speed is of the essence, machines sometimes see more than humans. For airport use, we therefore collaborated on a screening system that targets the passing luggage and detects damage to transport containers. Combined with HD images, the latest generation of image recognition software is able to recognise and match complex patterns. This lightens the workload on security staff – for example, by monitoring systems automatically reporting unaccompanied baggage items.

Where others cultivate cereals, the proportion of renewable energies is now increasing: We are managing the construction of one of Europe’s biggest photovoltaic systems– capacity: 50 megawatts. We are developing new control software that feeds electricity generated directly on the site into transportable primary storage units. A modern decentralised power networks netcode controls the system storage, network feed-in and even production times – decentrally, flexibly and effectively. Renewable energy doesn`t necessarily need more masts. It needs a more intelligent power network.

Wind power is the energy of the future – but not universally welcome. Of course: rotors with a diameter of more than 150 metres cannot operate without making a noise. But they can be made quieter. And that is what we are working towards, e.g. by developing new control software for existing turbines that measures vibration and avoids certain resonance effects by controlling the speed of rotation. The pressure in a large pipeline is 100 times atmospheric pressure. Oil and gas pipelines operate just as reliably in desert terrain with maximum temperatures topping 50° C as they do in the Arctic Circle at -40° C, 365 days a year. What gets the raw materials moving are pumping stations the size of a small house. We are developing units connected in series that don’t just operate in pipelines and chemical plants but also ensure, for example, that you can take a shower in the uppermost storeys of the latest skyscrapers just as you can 100 metres lower down.

The smallest components we develop sometimes have the biggest effect. Magnetic valves, for example, open and shut seamlessly, require almost no maintenance and are designed so flexibly that they are configurable as if in a module – in any size. For example, in sewage treatment plants they help to maintain optimal drinking water quality, they enable safe and cheap drug production and they make refineries cleaner and more economical.

The next automotive revolution has already begun – on the land. Nowadays, tractors are easily steered by joystick and are optimised for long periods of operation: these giants, over three metres high, are steered by autopilot to a tolerance of as little as 2.5 cm. User interfaces are touchscreen-operated and also control coupled implements; we are developing the software. Agricultural machines these days are part of an entire infrastructure: the latest generation works using satellite and weather data and uses images from agricultural drones.

We handled the roll-out of a CRM system for the Asia/Pacific region for a global player. Developing a new, smart generation of rescue helicopters containing thousands of assemblies is the very definition of top-notch engineering. We contribute critical assemblies in the primary and secondary structures. With a GPS-aided, four-axis autopilot for flights from take-off point to destination, the latest machines are a step forward for pilots who can concentrate on the essentials during search and rescue missions. The transition to the self-piloting helicopter (for example for donor organ transport movements) is seamless – self-landing systems are already being trialled.

Nowadays, one scarcely notices if someone is wearing a hearing aid: the latest models are in-ear solutions. Smart filters that filter background frequencies out of the signal and amplify speech enable the minicomputers to compensate for shortcomings. The smaller the structure, the more problematic it becomes: we are working on accommodating maximum battery life within the tiniest of spaces. The next step is networking: it will soon be possible to control settings via an app, mobile phones and other Bluetooth devices take the direct route with their audio signal being fed straight in.

Protecting the exacting standards in pharmaceutical production is a challenge. We have accepted this challenge and developed the rights management system for the production plants operated by one of Europe’s biggest manufacturers. Who is allowed to do what, and when? More than 60 software programs now ensure hermetic security. Besides bits and bytes it's our expertise where we score – in an entirely different threat area: the air in the production plants. The answer is bespoke clean room construction. In conjunction, this ensures that pharmaceutical products contain only what it says on the contents leaflet.

Increasing operating theatre workload: How can we ensure that every incision is in the right place? One answer is novel assistance systems. We are developing software and interfaces for high-tech operating theatre assistants which, based on whole body scans, are opening up a whole new level of customisation and precision – e.g. endoprosthetics. This entails the doctor guiding a machine arm that receives real-time feedback from integrated navigation software, providing the surgeon with a continuous and very accurate overview of the area to be operated on. The result: even the most challenging operations present fewer complications.

Drugs are only really safe if they cannot be abused and can also be kept safe from children. We are already preparing the existing production facilities for new, shockproof and water resistant tablets. Specially wrapped packaging such as this prevents incorrect or inexpert administration and facilitates successful treatment. The next step goes even further: a series of drugs which simply become non-effective in the event of a maximum dose already being present within the body.

If in future fewer hospital staff in white coats are seen scurrying along corridors, that will be because networked device landscapes are making data available more quickly throughout the building. We took over the monitoring of an extensive communication network for a renowned German clinical centre, checked for deficiencies and resilience and made it into a secure platform with access to all equipment. Medical aspects weigh most heavily in the balance here: if surgical equipment data is sent to other departments in real-time, the operating theatre door can remain hermetically sealed.

In an emergency, every doctor in charge can consult the colleagues who were previously involved, Intolerances and allergies are known, the medical history facilitates diagnosis. To avoid the patient being “transparent” to everyone, requires complex encryption, secure rights management and a resilient infrastructure. We are developing the foundations for this, designing test scenarios and trialling the numerous components.
